Human Trafficking is modern day slavery, it is the trade of humans for forced labor, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others and tragically Charlotte is the top location for sex trafficking in North Carolina. North Carolina is also in the top 10 states for human trafficking in the nation. Human Trafficking is one of the most profitable industries in the world. Billions of dollars change hands each year. Human Trafficking is worth more than the NBA, Major League Baseball, the NFL, and NASCAR combined. According to a 2017 UN report, "71 % of human trafficking victims are women and girls and almost one-third are children. It is imperative that we end human trafficking now.
In 2017, I was a primary sponsor for HB910 – Human Trafficking Resistance and Rescue. The purpose of the bill is to for the following:
To train law enforcement officers to identify human trafficking
Funding to provide shelter beds for victims of human trafficking
Funding to provide mental health services for human trafficking victims
I will be working tirelessly in the short session in May to get this bill passed so we can begin to end this horrific form of slavery.
